In today's post, we will delve into a powerful and evocative piece aimed at walking you through the journey of emotional discipline from a spiritual perspective.

**********************

It's common for humans to feel the powerful pull of their emotions. Whether it's joy, sadness, anger, or fear. Emotions can significantly impact our lives. However, it should not be an excuse for being overly emotional in a way that tends to hurt or keep you in distress. Understandably, emotions can be felt and related, leaving a lasting impact on your senses or being. However, your actions should not be predicated on your feelings.

Emotional discipline should be opted for. Emotional discipline is the ability to manage and regulate one’s emotions rather than being controlled by them. Unfortunately, many individuals subject themselves to the control of their feelings. It should be understood that you are not your emotions and should not be controlled by them.

Human beings are tripartite in nature, comprising spirit, soul, and body. Your spirit is the essence of your being, superior to your soul and body (Genesis 2:7). To better understand, you are a spirit with a soul that dwells in a body.

So, rather than submit to your emotions, what or whom should you submit to or be controlled by? Your spirit. This is where it gets more interesting. Your spirit isn’t powered off its own accord; it is subject to an overriding influence - God or the devil. Originally, it was meant to be just God. However, the fall of Adam led to the perversion of the original design of God, one of which is the establishment of dual lordship, leaving human beings to choose between God and the devil. Unfortunately, many individuals still have the devil as their lord, constantly falling into sin and gradually approaching destruction.

Why should you navigate your emotions effectively?

  • Emotions can be misleading. However, if you submit to your spirit, having your overriding influence as God, you will be guided into the truth.
  • To foster spiritual growth. If you live by the Spirit, you will have your mind set on what the Spirit desires (Romans 8:5-6).
  • To help you unclog your mind, enabling you to think critically and hear God clearly and precisely.
  • To help you develop a deeper sense of self-awareness.

Here is the biblical perspective:

  • Psalm 42:11- Why are you in despair, O my soul? Why have you become restless and disquieted within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet  (Acknowledging emotions and seeking God’s help).
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5- We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ (Taking control of thoughts and emotions).

Emotions should be navigated effectively, and not subjected to as a lead to making decisions or defining who you are. The Spirit of God should always be your point of reference when it comes to making decisions and defining who you are.

Many individuals have made wrong marital choices because they chose emotions over the leading of the Spirit of God. Many individuals have lost valuable and covenant relationships because they could not let go of anger, etc. Do not be controlled by your emotions. As it is written in 2 Corinthians 10:5, take control of your thoughts and emotions and not vice versa. Let the Spirit of God lead you.

You might be wondering, how can I be led by the Spirit of God? One prerequisite - give your life to Jesus. The giving of your life to Him is the receiving of His Spirit which will guide you into all truth, conform you to the very image of Christ and preserve you until the coming of our Lord Jesus.

Declare these words with faith in your heart:

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge you as my Saviour, and I ask that you forgive my sins. Make me yours and teach me your ways. Give me your Holy Spirit and help me to be led by your Spirit. Amen."

If you said that prayer, congratulations to you! Welcome to the great family of God!

Shades Of Black

Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Tick Tock. Yes, it’s the sound of the clock ticking.  Each sound is a constant reminder that time is passing, and you should make the most of it.  Somehow, you are there, glued to your bed with your hands wrapped about your pillow. Nothing is of urgency to you. Nothing is important to you. Yes, you heard from a friend, “The bed only makes weak, but a step to getting something done stirs up strength and productivity is definite.” Well, it resonates with you but then, you don’t seem to get the motivation to get you up from the bed. All the while you’ve been on the bed, not even a wink of sleep could you get. This time you tried, but then, all you could do is creep back into your blanket. Why? Those memories came flashing back.   Memories from the past few years came back rushing like a flood.   Most times, you cried but this time, you just wallowed in those thoughts. Those thoughts are dark thoughts. You are traumatised. The only things those thou...

What She's Scared Of

You are just there in the room of your own mind. All you can see is darkness, not even a single ray of light. With you in the room of your mind is anxiety, insecurity, hopelessness, uncertainty, intrusive and negative thinking patterns. You can't just help it! The voice in your head is so loud. You can't help but worry. Your physical state is being haunted. Your mental state isn't at rest either. "What if I make this decision, won't it mar my life?" How do I free myself of this fear of the unknown? "What career path do I take?" "Will I be successful in this business I'm about to embark on?" The thoughts going on in the room of your mind they are. These thoughts go as far as thinking about the future when the present isn't even settled just yet. The fear of child birth, fear of the kind of home you would have, the fear of getting sick, fear of death, fear of the future, fear of relationships, fear of failure, fear of marriage, and so...
